Obituary

Diana Sue (Grove) Ward, 71, passed away on November 21, 2020, from an extended battle with cancer, at her home in Guthrie, OK, surrounded by her loving family.

Diana was born in Midland, TX on May 24, 1949 to Mary Lou (White) and Philetus Arthur (Art) Grove, Jr. In 1953, her dad’s work took them to Houston, TX and then Bartlesville, OK ten years later. There she was active with the Sooner Saddle Riding Club and barrel racing until she graduated from high school in 1967. She then attended St. Anthony’s School of Nursing and while in college was set up on a blind date with a young cowboy, Charles Thomas (Tom) Ward, who worked at St. Anthony’s hospital as a dock supervisor. Tom knew that Diana was “the one” when she unsaddled her horse properly while on their first date. Two months later, on November 1, 1968, they were married and made their home in Mustang, OK.

Diana graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1970 beginning her nursing career that spanned more than 50 years. She worked at Baptist Hospital, Logan Hospital, Southwest Integris and Integris Baptist Medical Center, where she worked until August of this year. She was always available for any family member or friend that needed medical advice.

Tom and Diana raised their 5 children on their guest ranch southeast of Guthrie. In 1977, she joined Tom’s rodeo comedy act and they performed together for the next 9 years.

She was blessed with 6 grandsons and 3 granddaughters and was the most loving and giving MaMaw that any kid could ask for, not to mention their favorite shoulder to nap on!

She was a beloved member of the Poplar and Warner church of Christ pitching in whenever and wherever she could. Diana enjoyed making jewelry, crafting, and decorating for holidays (especially Christmas), but her heart was happiest when her family was together.

Diana is survived by Tom, her husband of 52 years; daughter, Alicia Ward, of Guthrie; daughter, Trista Hardaway, and husband, Barry, of Foss, OK; daughter, Deena Boswell, and husband, Larry, of Guthrie; daughter, Melinda (Mendy) Allison, and husband, Brian, of South Coffeyville, OK; son, Charley Ward, and wife, Lisa, of Guthrie; her 9 blessings: Tom Conrad Boswell, Boone Riley Hardaway, Nathan Buck Allison, Jaspur Clarence Boswell, Conagher Tyree Hardaway, Clairissa Jane Boswell, Blaine Tilghman Hardaway, Lyndi Sue Ward, and Daisi Renee Ward. Diana is also survived by her sister, Vicki Cubbage, and her husband, Allen, of Oologah, Ok; her brother, Miles Grove, and his wife, Liz, of Tulsa, OK; and her sister, Phyllis Abbey, and her husband, Pete, of Seattle, WA. Diana had a special bond with her in-laws Paul and Cathy Ward of Guthrie and David and Sherry McAlister of Yukon, OK. Diana also cherished her numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Rick Grove, her grandparents, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, JC and Norma Ward.

A memorial service led by Charley Ward and Kent Allen will be Friday, December 4, 2020, 2:00pm, at Memorial Road church of Christ. There will be a reception and time to visit with the family following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church of Christ with Diana Ward on the memo line and mailed to Poplar and Warner church of Christ, 320 N Poplar, Guthrie, OK 73044.
