Kathy Walters, 70, of Oklahoma City died the evening of Monday, February 24 at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center.
Kathy began life on January 7, 1950 as a miracle baby, born prematurely and at a low birthweight but with a will to survive and thrive that she would carry throughout her life. Living with cerebral palsy did not stand in the way of her many accomplishments and relationships, as she became a beloved teacher, a loving wife and mother, and a dear friend and inspiration to many.
Following high school, Kathy attended Oklahoma State University, where her focus was early childhood education. She returned to Oklahoma City and spent decades working with young children, their families, and their teachers. Her experiences ranged from teaching children in centers, to supporting the development of new child care settings, to educating future teachers at Oklahoma City Community College, to driving change in an Even Start program that supports family literacy.
Kathy was a champion of the vulnerable. Each of her many pets over the years came with a story of how it had found Kathy when otherwise alone in the world. Each holiday celebration included time spent on the floor playing with the youngest family members and keenly observing their interests.Kathy took delight in bringing joy to others and brought warmth, calm, and humor with her everywhere she would go. A dedicated practitioner of kindness and of meditation, she was active since the 1970s with the local Lotus Center and Friends of the Lotus, where she nurtured children and families and helped guide the development of a child care center.
She is survived by her husband George, her daughter Laura, her brother and sister-in-law James and Elaine, her nephews Steven and David and her niece Christine. She is preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Katherine Shirley, and her brother Ronald Shirley.
