Mary was born in Sasakwa, OK. Her parents owned a café there. Much of her young life was spent growing up in Wewoka, OK. She was in the class of 1945 at WHS. She attended A&M now known as Oklahoma State University. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She was also a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Shawnee, OK. Mary enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, antique collecting, and was a talented artist. She was a cosmetologist in her early years while residing in Salina, KS.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Julian and Sophie Herrera; her brother, Julian Herrera; and her husband, Jim Ackard. Mary is survived by a son, James (Jennifer) of Santa Fe N.M.; and a daughter, Ellen “Sue” (Danny) of Kaw City, OK.
She has four granddaughters, Kelsey, Mickey, Kerry, and Desiree; and seven great grandchildren.
Graveside service is pending at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, in Bentley, KS.
