Ray Mills

October 19, 1932 ~ January 14, 2021 (age 88)

Ray Mills, 88, of Norman Oklahoma joined his heavenly father on January 14, 2021. He was born October 19, 1932 to Clarence and Bessie Mills. Ray married the love of his life, Julia Shields Mills, June 9, 1956. He is survived by his wife Julia, their three children Peter Mills, Clare Jares, and Julia (Jan) Erhardt, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Ray proudly served his country in the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged from the Army with a rank of Sargent (E-5) in 1955. One of Ray’s favorite stories to tell about his time in the Army was about a recruit who changed his throwing hand during grenade training. Ray got 3 days off base after dressing down the recruit.

After returning from the war, Ray worked several different jobs before starting a dairy farm outside Chandler, OK in 1963. After selling the farm in 1972, Ray worked as a Mechanical Draftsman until his retirement in 1989. Ray and Julie remained in Norman, until moving to Blanchard in 2013.

Ray and Julia enjoyed traveling and spent many hours cruising the US with their RV in tow researching the Mills and Shields family histories. Their travels found cousins spread across the US that they have remained in touch with. In 1991 they traveled to Scotland and renewed their wedding vows. They also enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren in a yearly family reunion known as "Thanksmas" started in 1993.

Ray’s final wishes were to have his ashes scattered at Elgin Military Cemetery following a brief memorial. Memorial date to TBD. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dale Graham Veterans Foundation 1268 N. Interstate Dr. Norman Ok 73072 in the name of Ray Mills.
